Weatherford College Writing Center Print E-mail
Weatherford College Writing CenterThe Writing Center, located on the upper floor of the Weatherford College Library in Room 1, is open to all students who need help with writing assignments of any kind.  Before visiting the center, students are encouraged to seek help from the instructor who made the writing assignment. Tutors certified by the College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA) are prepared to assist students with all parts of the writing task including assistance with reading as needed. Students should provide the tutor specific instructions for each writing assignment, preferably by presenting the written instructions from their instructor. Writing Center staff also keep a file of handouts from instructors who prefer this method.

Staff:

Writing Center tutors for fall semester 2009 Natalie Allen, WC student peer tutor; Cathy Droste, adjunct instructor; Christopher Fritsch, adjunct instructor; James Howard, adjunct instructor; Dr. Joyce Pages, adjunct instructor; and Dr. Rick Selcer, adjunct instructor will be available at hours specified in the Writing Center Schedule (found online under Instructional Support).

Handouts:

In addition to one-to-one consultations, the Writing Center also offers handouts that cover various writing topics.  Students are free to drop by the center and browse this collection. Tutors will also direct students to the best online sources for writing assistance.

Writing Center Procedures:

  • Students are encouraged to drop in at the center whenever tutors are available; appointments are not necessary, and there is no limit to the number of visits a student can make.  Tutors will arrange time usage based on demand.
  • Both students and tutors will be required to sign in so that accurate records can be kept. Instructors who require proof of students visits may request a paper copy or a record from our sign-in system Tutortrac.
  • Students will also be expected to bring all materials needed for a particular task.  If a writing/reading assignment requires analysis, the material to be analyzed must be available to the tutor, and the students should have read and annotated the work beforehand.
  • All tutors will strongly encourage students to consult the instructor making their assignment as an integral part of the tutoring cycle.
  • Students should understand that tutors may consult with the instructor making the assignment in order to provide the most effective assistance.
  • Students will be asked to respond to a Writing Center Evaluation as often as deemed helpful.

Contacting the Writing Center:

Writing Center staff members have prepared a Referral Form for instructor use in sending students for tutoring; the form is not required but may be helpful in focusing on specific student needs. Please click here to download the form or contact the Writing Center to have it forwarded to you via email.
